Newcastle fans react as Andy Carroll replaces Joelinton against Sheffield United

Steve Bruce has made one change to the team that drew with Manchester City – and it’s a big one. Andy Carroll replaces Joelinton, starting his first game since rejoining the club.

It’s a big call from Bruce, as Carroll is yet to play more than half a game this season. Joelinton has really been struggling though, and needs a spell out of the starting XI.

However, Dwight Gayle seemed the more likely to replace him after Carroll’s latest injury.

Elsewhere, Fabian Schar remains on the bench, while DeAndre Yedlin misses out completely. Javi Manquillo continues on the right of defence in his absence.

The Magpies could technically go ninth with a win, but it will most likely lift them to 11th because of our inferior goal difference.

If we are able to get all three points we’ll be level with Sheffield United on 19, who have been praised up and down the land for their fine start to the season.

However, it’ll be easier said than done. The Blades are yet to really disgrace themselves on their return to the top flight, especially in front of a raucous Bramall Lane.

In contrast, Newcastle have been very inconsistent. While we were excellent against Manchester City, a repeat of the Aston Villa performance will most likely result in another defeat.
