Mehrdad Ghodoussi and co are struggling to bring more new signings to Newcastle United.
The Magpies started the summer strongly, bringing back Matt Targett then completing deals for Nick Pope and Sven Botman. The latter’s arrival was particularly impressive given the fact we beat AC Milan to his signature.
But since then the transfer window has proven to be a lot trickier. Eddie Howe needs attacking reinforcements, with a winger and a striker being targeted.
Plenty of targets have come and gone, with Newcastle unwilling to pay over the odds to get the players they need. It’s caused frustration for Toon fans, who are desperate to end the summer in an even stronger position.
But with less than two weeks to go until the transfer window closes, supporters must remember Ghodoussi’s words of wisdom.
What Ghodoussi said about transfers back in June
There was frustration earlier in the summer too when progress wasn’t being made. For some, it felt like all the momentum built up from last season was being wasted.
And in the midst of all of this, Ghodoussi sent supporters a message. In response to a tweet about transfers, he wrote: ‘Patience is a virtue’.
That came at a time when Newcastle were struggling to sign Hugo Ekitike and Botman. While the former didn’t arrive, the latter did. And so far he looks like a brilliant addition.
With that in mind, Toon fans need to be patient once more.
Newcastle’s owners will do what is needed before the window closes
While the new owners remain inexperienced, they have proven they know what they are doing. And more reputable people have arrived, with Dan Ashworth beginning his role and Darren Eales set to start on Monday.
Newcastle have the right people in place to make the right decision. And the emphasis is on the ‘right’ decision.
Every decision the Magpies make will have been thought through meticulously. It’s the way the owners operate, and it’s the way Eddie Howe operates.
We could easy throw money at some of the players we’ve been linked with and suffer the consequences. But that’s not Newcastle are doing things.
If a player hasn’t been signed, there has to be good reason.
Take Watford for example. Both Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr were and are available this summer. But Newcastle are trying to sign Joao Pedro instead. There has to be a good reason for that.
Ashworth’s record speaks for itself. We saw last week what he created at Brighton, and he will be doing the same here. However, it won’t happen overnight.
While the clock is ticking, there is no need to panic. Yes, it would be ideal if we had done all of our business already. But sadly that’s not the way the transfer market works.
Newcastle will have plenty of targets and scenarios drafted up going into the remaining days, and fans should be confident that the club will make the best decision for all involved.
Patience was a virtue earlier in the summer, and it is again now. Good things come to those who wait, and we have to trust that the new Toon owners will deliver what Howe needs and what the fans want.
