News on Thursday that Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had signed a new six-year contract at the club was great news, and Steve Bruce reiterated that at his pre-match press conference.

But many fans were quick to pick up on his comments, when they think he may have tried to take credit for the player signing for the Toon.

The Chronicle reported Bruce said: “He’s a very, very good goalkeeper. We’ve unearthed one, because not a lot of people had heard of him.

“We’re delighted that he’s tied himself to the club.”

Supporters took to social media to remind everyone that when Dubravka arrived on his initial loan deal, which was subsequently made permanent for the ludicrously small fee of £4 million, it was Rafa Benitez who was in charge.

Dubravka deal is great news no matter who signed him

Of course, Bruce was likely to be referring to Newcastle United when he used the word “we”, but the feelings of anger and resentment among fans is so strong right now, that they are using any ammunition available to ridicule and deride the club and its manager.

Regardless of who was responsible for identifying and signing Dubravka, we should all just be pleased he has comitted his future to the club, particularly after rumours surfaced in the summer that he was unhappy following Rafa’s departure.
