Twenty days into the January transfer window and zero first-team players have arrived at St James’ Park.
However, the rumours have gone round and round, with reports stating that Mike Ashley will back Steve Bruce. There’s been talk of Jarrod Bowen and Moussa Dembele, but there’s also someone we’re yet to hear anything about.
According to the Chronicle’s Mark Douglas, there is a ‘big target’ who hasn’t been mentioned in the press yet.
As expected, this has led to speculation from fans. There’s been multiple names thrown around Twitter, from Edinson Cavani to Glenn Murray.
But one of the most exciting players touted by fans is Josef Martinez. The Venezuelan striker has been linked before, and is a player Newcastle fans have wanted for about a year.
When Newcastle signed Miguel Almiron, the speedster had just finished dominating MLS alongside his partner in crime Martinez. The pair had an excellent understanding at Atlanta, and even had a trademark joint celebration.
Martinez has continued to impress, scoring 33 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions last season. He would be an instant hit with fans, and would hopefully get even more out of the improving Almiron.
Until the ‘mystery target’ is revealed, fans will continue to dream…
Is Martinez the mystery target? Some fans hope so

It would be great if #NUFC did try and sign Josef Martinéz from Atlanta United just to see the celebration with his mate Miguel Almirón I’m hoping he’s the ‘mystery player’ the club are looking at. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/riRKNhixVD

I know it’s only MLS, but Almiron has turned out just fine and this lads record is unbelievable, plus he’d probably only cost 20 million, defo worth a punt.
