News emerged in the Chronicle at the weekend that Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is close to signing a new, long-term deal, as the club start renegotiating contracts with key players.
It is a good sign that Dubravka wants to stay, claiming he feels “at home” on Tyneside, and the Slovakian stopper could be the first of many, with previous reports claiming Steve Bruce wants to tie down several players with new deals.
While the form of Freddie Woodman suggested he may be ready to step out of the St James’ Park shadows, and into the starting lineup at Newcastle, a new deal for Dubravka is a positive move.
I was one who suggested it could be time for Woodman to become first choice, but only if Newcastle thought selling Dubravka would give them more money to spend in other areas.
The fee they could command for Dubravka could be a significant amount, and while we have a future England international to replace him with, it could have made sense.
But if the club are not considering selling the Slovak, a new deal for him is a no-brainer.
Some fans’ reactions were very unexpected
Although the vast majority of fans would be over the moon to see Newcastle’s numer one commit to the club, there were some surprising reactions to the news on social media.
That could be due to the news being reported shortly after Dubravka made a mistake for Liverpool’s second goal on Saturday, but it was still an unexpectedly negative response from some.
Here are a selection of those reactions:
