Newcastle are still desperately light up front, and a mooted deal for Andy Carroll – now a free agent – is being seen as the answer, if he can prove his fitness, according to the Chronicle.
Chief football writer Lee Ryder tweeted the news of a potential deal today, but stressed that it will be dependent on the Gateshead-born striker proving his fitness in what would be a very stringent medical check.
He also adds that the player is eager for a deal to be struck, and if he signs, it would be fair to say it will not be one of those moves made just for the money.

In many ways, Mike Ashley would see his signing as a masterstroke, with the player having emerged from the Newcastle academy, cost no money, sold to Liverpool for an over-the-top fee of £35 million, and re-signed for nothing.
While it would undoubtedly be a massive gamble, from the initial reactions on social media, it seems it is one fans are hoping we take.
With him being a free-agent, a deal for Carroll does not have to be done today, but Newcastle will surely hope to complete it before the deadline, as they may need to find a club for the likes of Dwight Gayle before the window closes.
