Despite only lasting 30 seconds, Andy Carroll’s cameo against West Brom was a big talking point for Newcastle fans.
Unsurprisingly, the striker was unable to have any impact on the game. However, he did at least have time to give away his obligatory free kick.
Carroll’s arrival seemed like an attempt to run down the clock by Steve Bruce, as he looked to guarantee a point against struggling West Brom.
The 32-year-old had no time to influence proceedings, while Dwight Gayle was equally as ineffective.
Despite coming on early in the second half, Gayle played in a strange midfield role that did not suit him at all.
After the game, Bruce stated that the reason he didn’t start Carroll or Gayle was because he would have had to change the system.
However, with the Magpies looking toothless in attack, Bruce’s decision not to name a recognised striker was heavily criticised.
Hopefully that changes on Friday night, as Newcastle welcome Aston Villa to St James’ Park. Whether it’s Gayle or Carroll, at least one of them needs to start.
Bruce’s side need to show a lot more ambition in attack. While their three best forwards are injured, that is no excuse for not even trying to score a goal.
According to the Chronicle, Carroll has been frustrated at the lack of opportunities this season.
His contract at the club expires this summer, and the local lad will have to wait until May to discover his future. Perhaps it will depend on what division the Magpies find themselves in.

Some believe he should get a chance in the side, while others don’t understand why he’s even at the club.
