Florian Lejeune made his long-awaited comeback, playing for the Under-23 side last night, and Newcastle fans were pleased to see the defender on the pitch again.

The French centre-back played 45 minutes, as Neil Redfearn’s side came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the Premier League 2 game against Middlesbrough.

Although against young opposition, Lejeune seemed to have instantly found his form again, with Redfearn quick to praise the “real class” he showed at times.

When fit, Lejeune is undoubtedly our best ball-playing central defender, and the thought of having both Fabian Schar and him in the same lineup is an exciting prospect for both Steve Bruce, and the fans.

He seemed to suffer no immediate after-effects from the game with him hoping to figure in Bruce’s first-team plans.

He told the Newcastle United website: “I am happy to be playing again after six months. I’ll keep going now and aim for the first team and training.”

It is good news to see Lejeune playing football again

It is certainly a welcome sight to see him on the football pitch again, and if anyone deserves a long, injury-free run in the side, it is Lejeune.

Having the courage and determination to come back from two lengthy spells out due to serious knee ligament injuries, is testament to the character of the player, and are exactly the qualities a manager wants from his players.

It is also why Newcastle fans were so pleased to have their player fit again, as you can see from the replies to Lejeune’s post on Twitter:
