Newcastle were played off the park in a 0-4 defeat by Wolves in the opening game of the Premier League Asia Trophy, which did little to ease fans’ worries about the season ahead.

With the news of Steve Bruce’s appointment as head-coach preceding the game, feelings were already running high for Toon fans, who were angry and distraught at the appointment.

Newcastle made little impression on a game which was dominated by Wolves, who looked lightyears ahead in terms of both fitness and ability.

A team made up of former outcasts and youth players, to accompany the more established names from last season were woeful, and fans were left in no doubt of the precarious position the club finds itself in.

The Newcastle squad needs strengthening in all areas just to survive

Failure to seriously strengthen this squad will result in relegation, and if there is a poor start to the season, with a tough set of fixtures in the opening couple of months, Bruce’s position could become under threat before the clocks go back.
