Since leaving Newcastle, Hatem Ben Arfa’s career has been a roller-coaster, with him left without a club this season, but Serie A side Genoa may be set to change that.
A report on the Sky Sport Italia website claims the Italian side are weighing up a move to take the former Toon favourite on a deal until the end of the season.
Genoa’s Ivory Coast star Christian Kouame is out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and the report claims former Fulham player, Muamer Tankovic, is set to replace him in January.
But they are also said to be considering a move for Ben Arfa, who they considered signing in the summer, but eventually opted against it.
On his day, Ben Arfa could be unplayable, and whether he still has that type of performance in him, having not played competitively since last season, is not known.
Ben Arfa’s career went downhill after leaving Newcastle
He has suffered a tough few years since leaving Tyneside, although signing for PSG seemed to catapult him to a new level, before it all went wrong, and ended up with the player taking them to court, after claiming he was frozen out at the club.
In fact, since leaving Newcastle in 2014, Ben Arfa has had four different clubs and two spells without a club, and a fresh start at Genoa could be exactly what he needs.
His footballing ability has never been in question, but it is the extra baggage that comes with him and his attitude, that sees some clubs reluctant to pursue a deal.
But at 32-years-old, this could well be the last opportunity for Ben Arfa, and if he is given the chance, he must grasp it with both hands.
