Joselu has come in for a lot of criticism this season.

The former Stoke man’s finishing has left a lot to be desired but, amid overseas interest, Newcastle simply can’t afford to let him go.

The Spaniard has three goals this season – the same as fringe player and defender, Ciaran Clark. That’s perhaps a worrying stat when he’s currently United’s back-up striker.

Joselu is the only back-up to Rondon

However, with Salomon Rondon the Magpies’ only other senior striker, Joselu shouldn’t be allowed to leave Tyneside for Chinese club Tianjin Teda.

Mike Ashley and Rafael Benitez have been at loggerheads regarding transfers for several years now. If the Spaniard was to leave, Newcastle would need a ready-made replacement. History, though, has proven that this wouldn’t necessarily happen.

While Toon fans aren’t happy with the ability of Joselu, his presence in the squad is needed. His work rate isn’t in question but he must start finding the net if he’s to stop the crowd’s grumbles.

An injury to Rondon doesn’t bear thinking about, but with Elias Sorensen heading out on loan to Blackpool, Joselu is needed until at least the end of the season.
