Newcastle are making a big mistake if they sign £30m player who recently struggled at St James’ Park

Newcastle United are no strangers to targeting players from Chelsea.

The Magpies officially signed Lewis Hall from Chelsea over the summer, while Noni Madueke was a major target for Newcastle.

Sadly for Eddie Howe, the winger did not arrive at St James’ Park, and his form at Stamford Bridge suggests that he is unlikely to be available in January.

But while Newcastle may not get a fresh chance to target Madueke, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested that another Chelsea player could be on Paul Mitchell’s radar.

According to Romano’s Daily Briefing, Chelsea could allow Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to leave the club, just months after his arrival from Leicester City.

The midfielder joined Chelsea from Leicester for £30million over the summer, but has failed to make much of an impression at Stamford Bridge.

That could result in an early departure, with Romano stating that Newcastle are one of multiple Premier League clubs who could target a deal for the 26-year-old. The likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also named as potentially interested parties.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall recently struggled against Newcastle

Since swapping Leicester for Chelsea, Dewsbury-Hall has not had much luck. He has made just three Premier League appearances so far, and is now struggling to even be included on Enzo Maresca’s bench.

Dewsbury-Hall has at least been a consistent presence in Chelsea’s cup team, representing the Blues in the UEFA Conference League and the Carabao Cup.

However, Newcastle ended Chelsea’s Carabao Cup adventure, on a night that saw Dewsbury-Hall struggle on Tyneside.

The midfielder was asked to play on the right of attack at St James’ Park, and was completely anonymous. He could not get involved in the game, and was subsequently taken off after 57 minutes.

It was a miserable evening for Dewsbury-Hall that ended with Newcastle advancing to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle do not need Dewsbury-Hall

Even if Dewsbury-Hall had lit up St James’ Park that night, there is no need for him in Eddie Howe’s Newcastle squad.

Midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position, with so many players fighting to get in the starting XI.

There is so much quality that Sandro Tonali finds himself out of the team, while Joelinton is being used in attack. As for wonderkid Lewis Miley, he has barely featured since his recovery from injury.

When the January transfer window opens, the last thing Newcastle United need is another midfielder – let alone one who has had little to no impact at Chelsea.

Given Newcastle’s PSR problems and their need for a winger and a centre-back, it would be a massive waste of resources to bring Dewsbury-Hall to St James’ Park.

While Romano is reporting that Chelsea could let Dewsbury-Hall leave, it feels incredibly unlikely that Newcastle could rescue him.
