Matt Ritchie is back training with the Newcastle squad this week, according to the Chronicle, and it could spell bad news for the struggling Miguel Almiron.
It provided a titbit of good news for Toon fans, on a day where they received the disappointing news that Fabian Schar and Andy Carroll are both likely to miss the game with Wolves at St James’ Park this weekend.
And while the news on an impending Ritchie return is a boost, it may have Almiron sweating over his place in the starting lineup.
The report even hints that Ritchie could be available for this weekend’s match, which would give Steve Bruce another decision to make.
Ritchie had been away in the Middle East to aid his recovery, and having returned last weekend, it seems to have worked wonders, with the player managing to get virtually a full week of training under his belt.
Having the former Bournemouth winger available will be a boost for Bruce, and although he hinted previously that Almiron was a likely starter this weekend, he could now take a different approach.
Ritchie gives Newcastle something no other player does
Certainly having Ritchie in the side gives Newcastle an extra edge, and his combative style has been badly missed while he has been out.
Almiron needs to have a spell on the bench, in a bid to rediscover his best form, and find the elusive goal he is desperate for.
With Allan Saint-Maximin looking superb during the last couple of games, and Jetro Willems looking the part in the left wing-back role, it looks to be a straight choice between the Paraguayan and Ritchie for Sunday.
I am convinced that Almiron’s best chance to get his first goal for the club will come from him being used as an impact substitute in the second-half of a game, with his fresh legs running at tiring defenders.
So for me, the selection of Ritchie for the first hour of the game, with Almiron replacing him for the final 30 minutes, picks itself.
It remains to be seen whether Bruce agrees, however, but it is ultimately a decision that could win or lose the game for Newcastle.
