Newcastle worked hard for a huge three points at Bramall Lane against Sheffield United, in a smash and grab win with Marin Dubravka putting in a world class performance.
It was the perfect away display, during which Newcastle soaked up all the home side’s pressure and pinched two goals on the counter-attack.
But that does not tell the whole story, as Chris Wilder’s side had 13 attempts at goal, six of which were on target, but unfortunately for them, they came up against the brick wall that was Dubravka.
The Slovakian goalkeeper pulled off a number of outstanding saves, and it seemed he would single-handedly keep the Blades out.
He was absolutely outstanding, and showed just why Newcastle rewarded him recently with a new, improved six year contract. He earned every penny of his new salary in Yorkshire last night.
Dubravka’s goalkeeping display was out of the top drawer
We wrote a few days ago about the performance of Tim Krul at Tottenham a few years ago, as one of our iconic moments of the decade, and Dubravka’s superb showing at Sheffield United was not too far behind it.
There was a worrying time in the second half, however, with the keeper having to throw the ball into touch to receive treatment for an injury, despite loud derision from the home fans.
But it was clear there was a problem, and Dubravka was not walking comfortably after his treatment.
Fans will hope he is fit to face Southampton at St James’ Park on Sunday, particularly given the form he has been in over the past two games.
