Newcastle United are bang out of form with just one win so far this season. Thankfully, Manchester United are also in bad form.
The Red Devils have been in action twice this week. First they drew 1-1 at home with Arsenal in what was an awful game. Then in the Europa League, they drew 0-0 with AZ Alkmaar, unable to register a shot on goal. And failure to win gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer an unwanted record.
Manchester United have failed to win any of their last 10 away games. That’s their longest run on the road without a win since 1989.
So Newcastle have a chance to extend that run against a side that is playing with no confidence at all. This isn’t the Manchester United we used to know.
They’re a club in transition, but just what are they transitioning in to? While Solskjaer looks for a solution, Steve Bruce could put another nail in the Norwegian’s coffin.
The Toon boss must recognise this as a great chance to get some more points on the board and relieve the pressure on his shoulders. While a win against this Manchester United side doesn’t hold the same credence as a win against Sir Alex Ferguson’s would, we are desperate for three points. It doesn’t matter where they come from.
Sunday will see two nervous sides who can’t afford another defeat. Newcastle need a fast start to unsettle the opposition and get the home fans on board.
Can Bruce get his first home win at the expense of his former club? The form book suggests he’s got a chance.
