The Chronicle have reported that Newcastle have been scouting Rochdale’s teenager Luke Matheson, who was in the headlines this week when he scored at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup.
The 16-year-old right back has been monitored by the Magpies long before his goal-scoring exploits this week, and is just the type of highly rated youngster that the club are trying to lure.

After snapping up Chelsea’s young midfielder Kyle Scott and Bolton’s highly regarded goalkeeper, Jake Turner, in the summer, Newcastle have definitely put an emphasis on bringing more young talent to the club.
Matheson has only made two League One appearances for Rochdale this season – one of which was in their 2-1 defeat to Sunderland – but played every minute of their three EFL Cup games.

He made his debut for the club last season, while still aged 15, and made three League One appearances, as well as a further four in the EFL Trophy.
Newcastle aiming to snap-up young talent
The goal against Manchester United was his first for the club, and it has catapulted him into the public domain, with his all-round performance sure to have caught the eye of some of the Premier League scouts.

He certainly would be a great addition to Newcastle’s youth ranks, and if he could be tempted to join in January, he could definitely be a player worth making a move for.
It will be worth keeping a keen eye on Newcastle’s transfer business in January and next summer, with the youth players being cherry-picked becoming as important as making signings to the senior squad.
