According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are looking to sign Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer this summer.

The Hoops reportedly want around £25million for the defender, although Newcastle are looking to pay closer to £8million.

The Daily Mail also claim that Norwich are interested, as they prepare to return to the Premier League.

Ajer is a man in demand, but is reportedly keen on a move to St James’ Park.

The stumbling block could be the fee, with Celtic wanting much more than Newcastle are seemingly willing to pay.

However, Ajer’s contract situation could give Newcastle a boost.

Ajer’s Celtic deal set to expire in 2022

As it stands, Celtic could lose Ajer for absolutely nothing in the summer of 2022.

The 23-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract, meaning Celtic don’t have long to cash in.

Come next January, Ajer is free to negotiate with other clubs and could sign a pre-contract agreement with whoever he wants.

That would be terrible news for Celtic, who will no doubt want to cash in on one of their more impressive players.

The Bhoys have made a habit of selling their best players in years gone by, with the likes of Kieran Tierney and Virgil van Dijk heading to the Premier League.

Sadly for Celtic, it is something they have to do to thrive financially.

They often do a brilliant job of signing young European players on the cheap before selling them for a huge profit.

That is surely what they intend to do with Ajer. And if he is set on leaving, they need to let him go this summer or risk losing him for nothing.

That should give Newcastle some power in negotiations. While they may need to up their offer, they do not need to be held to ransom by Celtic.

If Celtic don’t lower their asking price, Newcastle can risk waiting six months and arrange a free transfer for the summer of 2022.

Ajer would be a wonderful signing for Newcastle, but only at the right price. The ball is in our court.
