Joelinton might give Eddie Howe an easy decision to make for Newcastle United vs Sunderland

On current form, Lewis Miley deserves to start for Newcastle United against Sunderland ahead of Joelinton.

Miley impressed as Newcastle United drew with Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday and also proved crucial in their last away win in the Premier League at Everton.

Joelinton, meanwhile, is struggling.

Who are you starting in midfield vs Sunderland? 🤔

Bruno and Tonali have to start, obviously.

Miley is in brilliant form for Newcastle and would no doubt love to start against Sunderland as the Tyne-Wear derby returns to the big leagues.

Still, and while it may be unpopular, there’s a very compelling case to play Joelinton instead.

Why Eddie Howe could start Joelinton for Newcastle United against Sunderland

It would be foolish to overlook Joelinton’s inconsistent form for Newcastle United this season.

The Brazilian has struggled to scale previous heights and, sadly, has been dealing with injuries on a more frequent basis.

However, the last time that Newcastle played a ‘bigger game’, Joelinton stepped up and performed well against Manchester City.

At his best, the 29-year-old is a powerful midfield enforcer. His physicality could be very helpful in the pressure-cooker environment Sunderland versus Newcastle United creates.

On a per-game basis this season, Joelinton averages more tackles and interceptions than Miley. That’s not to say he’s necessarily a better player, but that kind of intensity will be needed.

There will be times where Newcastle are under pressure. They need physicality and though Miley is hardly a shrinking violet, Joelinton looks a much better option in that one respect.

Joelinton has dropped a big hint ahead of Newcastle United vs Sunderland after his injury

Joelinton came off injured against Leverkusen, though it’s not thought to be a serious issue.

In fact, on Friday night, the midfielder posted a story onto his Instagram page that showed him getting a haircut.

It’s something he’s done before various big games before, presumably as the Sky cameras will be all over the derby!

Dropping Miley would be harsh and it’s difficult to say it would be exactly the right call. Joelinton, however, can’t be written off.

If Howe does play him, he’s got things to bring to the party.
