Jetro Willems to return: Predicted Newcastle lineup to face Manchester United

Newcastle can move above Manchester United with a win on Boxing Day.

The Magpies are now level on points with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, having beat Crystal Palace on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to a shock defeat to bottom of the league Watford.

With the busy Christmas period underway, what changes will Steve Bruce consider?

Jetro Willems returns

While we did beat Palace, it was clear that we missed Jetro Willems. The Dutchman missed the game after picking up a knock against Burnley, but should be fit for the Boxing Day encounter.

He’ll likely replace Paul Dummett, who didn’t really excel as a left wing-back. He limped off towards the end of the game on Saturday, so Bruce might have no choice but to replace him with Willems.

Florian Lejeune impressed on his return, and will likely have to continue in the side alongside Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar.

A change in midfield?

With so many games coming up, Bruce might consider a change to his midfield.

That could open a door for Sean Longstaff. The youngster replaced Isaac Hayden in the second half on Saturday, and we’re predicting him to do the same from the off at Old Trafford.

Longstaff needs a big performance after a poor showing away to Burnley. He’ll start to the right of Jonjo Shelvey, with goal hero Miguel Almiron on the left of the three.

Chance for Gayle

Ahead of the game, Bruce admitted it’ll be difficult for Carroll to start at Old Trafford. That means Dwight Gayle might get an opportunity.

We should stick with the 3-5-2 formation, and start Gayle alongside Joelinton. The duo have one goal between them this season, and both players will have a massive point to prove.

Predicted lineup to face Manchester United: Dubravka; Schar, Fernandez, Lejeune; Manquillo, Longstaff, Shelvey, Almiron, Willems; Gayle, Joelinton.
