Jacob Murphy's run in the Newcastle starting XI should end vs Man United

Jacob Murphy has started Newcastle United’s last two games, but that run must come to an end this weekend against Manchester United.

The Magpies have a huge game at Old Trafford on Sunday. A win against Erik ten Hag’s side would really show that we are contenders for a European place.

Eddie Howe’s team are currently in sixth position, and have only lost once this season. It has been an excellent start to the campaign, and the trip to Manchester comes at an intriguing time.

Newcastle are playing well and with confidence. We are being talked up as top six contenders, but could come crashing down to earth this weekend.

With that in mind, Howe will be keen to start his best players against the Red Devils. And that could be bad news for Murphy.

Murphy should not start against Man United

The 27-year-old was a shock starter against Fulham. He did okay on the flank for Newcastle, but arguably should have done more against the Cottagers’ 10 men.

But he did enough to start on Saturday, and was much better versus Brentford. He even got himself a goal, scoring the Magpies’ second in the 5-1 triumph.

However, there was a big return at the weekend. Allan Saint-Maximin is back.

The Frenchman came off the bench and provided an exciting cameo, with his efforts contributing towards Ethan Pinnock’s own goal.

With a full week of training behind him, Saint-Maximin should be ready to start this weekend. And he has to be recalled to the starting XI over Murphy.

It’s harsh on the £12million man, but Howe needs to put out his best team. And Saint-Maximin absolutely features in that – there is no debate.

If Saint-Maximin is fit to start then he has to take Murphy’s place on the left wing at Old Trafford.
