Jacob Murphy is under pressure to excel with new Newcastle deal

Newcastle United yesterday announced new contracts for a handful of players, after weeks of silence.

The Magpies have moved to offer extensions to Jacob Murphy, Federico Fernandez and Dwight Gayle.

And clauses for another 12 months have been activated for Fabian Schar and Paul Dummett.

Newcastle didn’t actually provide any details regarding the lenth of those contracts.

It’s been claimed Fernandez has signed up for two more years, with the option of a further 12 months.

And apparently, Murphy’s contract is for a whopping six years.

Murphy’s agency New Era Global said (via Chronicle Live): “Congratulations to client Jacob Murphy who has signed a new six-year contract with Newcastle United.”

There isn’t any mention of how much he’ll be earning from here.

One would imagine he has seen an increase though. He was previously said to be taking home £25,000-a-week.

A six-year deal is a remarkable reward for someone who was close to leaving the club last year.

The star was linked with a move to Rangers, but stayed put and went on to become a key player for Steve Bruce in 2020/21.

New contract cranks up the pressure

Murphy’s performances last season definitely warranted a new contract.

A six-year deal is quite surprising though.

It indicates that Newcastle see him as a very valuable player.

Such a show of faith potentially now means there is more pressure on Murphy.

For some perspective, the Magpies handed Allan Saint-Maximin a six-year deal last year – and he is a game-changer.

To get the same treatment as the Frenchman – although he likely won’t earn as much – is certainly going to lead to a bit more scrutiny of Murphy’s performances from here on in.
