As poor as Newcastle have been as of late, Jacob Murphy has been one of the bright sparks in the team.
Heading into this season, Newcastle had a number of first-team players heading into the final year of their contract, and one man whose future looked at risk was Murphy.
The winger spent the last two seasons out on loan at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday, and it looked unlikely that he was ever going to work his way into Steve Bruce’s plans, despite scoring nine goals for the Owls in the Championship last term.
Newcastle have very few spaces in their side on the wings with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron considered the club’s star players, while the summer arrival of Ryan Fraser won’t have helped Murphy’s chances on the wing.
However, it seems as though his attacking days may be behind him as he’s found a new lease of life in the defence.
Indeed, Murphy has often been deployed as a right back or a wing-back this season, and he’s flourished in that role.
Right-back has been Newcastle’s problem position for the longest time, but in Murphy they seem to have found a solution, and in just 259 minutes of playing there, he’s already shown he’s a better option than Emil Krafth or DeAndre Yedlin.
Rumours are now circulating that Murphy is set to get a new contract, and you’d be hard pressed to find someone who’d say he doesn’t deserve it.
Murphy faced a huge challenge this season in trying to prove himself worthy of being a United player, but he’s passed that test with flying colours, and if he is given a new contract that will be incredibly welcome news.
