A report in the Shields Gazette claimed that Jack Colback is playing his way into contention for a spot in Newcastle’s Premier League squad, but it would be a mistake if it becomes reality.
The flame-haired midfielder has had plenty of minutes for Newcastle this pre-season, and it was Steve Bruce who gave him his debut at Sunderland in 2011.
His displays both in China and Preston were typically combative, and no one has ever doubted his attitude when playing.
But those performances also showed why he should not be included in future plans, with most of his passes being sideways or backwards, and largely negative.
Changing Isaac Hayden’s mind could reduce need for midfield recruits
With Bruce seeming to be increasingly hopeful of convincing Isaac Hayden to stay, the numbers in the middle of the park suddenly look better.
With Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Ki Sung Yueng and Jonjo Shelvey all likely to be in the squad next season, it could still see Colback leave before the end of the window.
If he does stay, he may well be limited to League Cup games and a bit-part role, which would not really help the player or Newcastle.
Whereas some fans believed he should leave due to a falling out with then manager Rafa Benitez, it is ability and style of play that should see him leave, not arguments.
The player is into the last year of his deal, and it could be best for everyone concerned if Newcastle agree to tear up his current deal, and let the player find a new club for free, without his current salary becoming an obstacle for interested clubs.
