How Alexander Isak can help save Allan Saint-Maximin's Newcastle career

Allan Saint-Maximin is fighting for his future at Newcastle United, but he could receive a helping hand from his teammate Alexander Isak.

The Athletic have reported that Newcastle will consider selling Saint-Maximin this summer if they receive a decent offer for him.

It could be a summer of change at St James’ Park, especially if we can qualify for Europe. There will be plenty of comings and goings, with multiple players now facing up to the challenge of continuing to be a part of Eddie Howe’s squad.

One of those is Saint-Maximin. He is one of the most gifted players at the club right now, but he is no longer the talisman that he was under Steve Bruce.

The Frenchman has endured a frustrating season due to injury, while Newcastle have found a way to be successful without him.

That could lead to the Magpies cashing in this summer, which would be disappointing for fans of the 26-year-old. He is an absolute delight to watch when he is on form, and has been described as ‘unplayable‘ on his day.

That hasn’t happened enough this season, which has led to speculation that he could be sold. However, perhaps his blossoming partnership with Isak could save his Toon career.

What Saint-Maximin previously said about Alexander Isak

Following the League Cup semi final first leg win over Southampton back in January, Saint-Maximin spoke about his desire to play more with summer signing Isak.

He told BBC Newcastle: “I have a great connection with him. We try to work hard together to push the manager to let us play. I like to play with all the players, but I spend a lot of time with Isak. He’s an incredible player. I want to be able to play with him and show what we are capable of doing on the pitch.”

They performed well on that night, in what was the first hint of a partnership developing. We saw another glimpse against Liverpool last month, then again on Sunday.

Newcastle duo clearly have a great understanding on the pitch

The duo were named in the starting XI to face Wolves, and combined brilliantly at times in the first half. While Maxi is often guilty of holding onto the ball for too long, he was constantly looking to play his Swedish teammate in behind.

It did not lead to any goals, but the threat was there. They clearly have great chemistry, and it is only going to grow the more they play together.

And that is why Isak could be the secret to saving ASM’s Newcastle career. If the 23-year-old can convert the chances that Saint-Maximin creates then it will be much more likely that he stays at St James’ Park.

The winger needs to increase his numbers – he only has four goal contributions this season. There are obviously issues defensively, but he is improving. However, he will never be perfect in that respect.

But to compensate, he needs to be able to justify his place in the side with goals and assists. That is why this blossoming partnership with Isak is so crucial for Saint-Maximin between now and the end of the season.
