When Rafa Benitez left Newcastle there was disarray, with a list as long as your arm of potential replacements for the idolised Spaniard, before Steve Bruce was eventually appointed.
One of the early names mentioned in the press as a potential successor to Rafa, was Garry Monk, according to the Daily Echo newspaper.

It never sounded like a realistic possibility, and so it turned out, although some Toon fans would argue that neither did Bruce, and we all know what happened there.
But news has emerged today from Sky Sports that the merry-go-round is about to go full circle, with Monk set to be announced as Bruce’s replacement at Hillsborough.

Monk’s record as manager leaves a lot to be desired, after being considered one of the up and coming British managers when he was in charge at Swansea.
He has since become something of a journeyman manager, and his subsequent spells in charge at Leeds. Middlesbrough and Birmingham all lasted less than 18 months.
Sheffield Wednesday fans will blame Bruce and Newcastle for this season’s fortunes
Sheffield Wednesday fans were livid with Bruce when he left them in the lurch just before the start of the season, and it is unlikely that the appointment of Monk will ease their ill-feeling towards their former manager.

They will feel – with some justification – that what happens this season will all be Bruce’s fault.
Newcastle featured heavily with regard to the Wednesday job, as many fans were initially hoping former Toon boss Chris Hughton would be given the role.
