Newcastle United appear to have missed out on a potentially top player.
According to a Times article back in October 2020, the Magpies actually showed interest in Ben Godfrey before the player ultimately moved to Merseyside.

The article states: “Newcastle United and Fulham have also been interested in Godfrey but a move to Everton appealed to the player.”
Godfrey has been in fine form at Goodison Park since his move, impressing fans with a well-rounded game and impressive versatility.
He’s been a regular under Carlo Ancelotti, and has made key contributions for the Toffees in what’s been a very impressive season from them so far.

In the end last summer, Newcastle did raid Norwich but landed left-back Jamal Lewis instead.
Lewis has not fared quite as well as his old teammate this term and has been questioned by some Magpies fans at times this season following his £15 million move (Sky Sports).
Godfrey could end up a big regret for Newcastle
Godfrey has made a really impressive start for Everton following his £25 million move (BBC Sport), and it looks as though he could well end up a major regret for Newcastle.

Given the average age of Newcastle’s current centre-halves, a big push for the pacy and powerful Godfrey would have made sense.
But it seems the board didn’t quite see what a brilliant player Godfrey could become, and watching his career play out could really end up stinging, especially when he surely goes on to become an England international.
