Federico Fernandez must start against Wolves - not Paul Dummett

Steve Bruce has a selection dilemma against Wolves. Should he start Federico Fernandez or Paul Dummett?

The pair are in contention to start following Fabian Schar’s knee injury, a blow that we really didn’t need. The Swiss centre-back is key to the way we play, and we don’t really have anyone who can do what he does.

It’s still too early for Florian Lejeune to start, meaning either Fernandez or Dummett will come into the team. Either that or Bruce goes for a back four, which would be an accident waiting to happen.

So who should he pick?

Fernandez fits the bill

At the start of the season, Dummett was excellent. It’s still not clear why he lost his place to Ciaran Clark, but in fairness the former Villa man has been solid since coming in.

But for all of Dummett’s good performances, Fernandez is the one who should start on Sunday.

Schar normally operates on the right of the three centre-backs, a role that is obviously more suited to a right-footed player. Fernandez is, Dummett isn’t.

Now Bruce could move Lascelles and Clark to accommodate Dummett playing as the left centre-back, but it’s easier if just one change is made.

Fernandez is certainly talented enough, and he’s an extra voice at the back who has proven he can be a leader since arriving for £6 million in 2018.

While Dummett is having the better season, the vacancy in Bruce’s XI is more suited to Fernandez.
