Newcastle United put in an awful showing during today’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.
The Magpies had the chance to pull further clear of Fulham, who were beaten by Chelsea yesterday.
Arsenal have been extremely poor this season, and this was a chance for the Toon to get a great result, and take another big step towards Premier League safety.
But ultimately there was no danger of that, with Arsenal superior in all departments.
It was an easy victory for Mikel Arteta’s side, and the performance was a reminder that Steve Bruce is just not the man to take Newcastle forward as an ambitious football club.
One man who struggled at St. James’ Park was Federico Fernandez, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
The Argentine defender was not the worst Newcastle player today, but his sluggish showings are under the microscope considering his contractual situation.
Sadly, Fernandez’s age appears to be catching up with him now, and it should be within the club’s interests to green-light his exit.
Newcastle need to replace Fernandez
He’s represented the club well, but it’s time for the club to move on.
He should be allowed to depart as a free agent, rather than extending just to protect his value, which wouldn’t be high anyway given his age.
The level he’s been showing just hasn’t been high enough to warrant an offer of an extension, and the club should now be trying to identify a younger replacement.
