Today is Newcastle legend, and record goalscorer, Alan Shearer’s 49th birthday, and fans have been quick to react to the club’s celebratory tweet to him, with predictable sarcasm.
In these times of turmoil, Shearer has always been solidly on the side of the supporters, mainly because he is one of them himself.

But he has more reason to be angry with the club, and Mike Ashley in particular, after the less than amicable ending to his temporary management stint at St James’ Park.
The striker, who surpassed previous record scorer Jackie Milburn, failed to keep Newcastle in the Premier League after being asked to try to save the club who were already in freefall.
In a similar storyline to this summer with Rafa Benitez, Shearer gave Newcastle his blueprint for how to take the club forward following relegation, and was waiting to hear back from those in charge about his future.
Infamously, that call never came, Shearer was left in limbo, and to this day he is still waitint to hear from them.
Alan Shearer’s love for Newcastle United has never waned
Yet despite what happened, he has never lost his love for the Toon, even if his feelings towards the owner are less than pleasant.
So when the club issued a happy birthday message, Newcastle fans were quick to comment.
Wait until Mike Ashley hears the social media team have publicly sent good wishes to @alanshearer

Rings hollow. He’s still waiting for the call from the club after ten years.

The amount you constantly lie to the fans, I’m gonna check his Wikipedia page first before confirming it’s his actual birthday
