Floyd Mayweather, the next owner of Newcastle United?

That’s the latest ridiculous twist in the takeover saga that refuses to end.

We had reports of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund buying the club from Mike Ashley, and now boxing megastar Mayweather has thrown his hat in the ring.

Well, kind of…

Mayweather was in Newcastle this weekend for a media event conducted by Toon fan Steve Wraith.

Wraith asked the question about him buying the Magpies, and Mayweather responded: “The Newcastle football team is an unbelievable team, a hell of a team.

“If the people want me to buy the Newcastle team let me know.”

Despite the story being all over the media today, Mayweather isn’t really going to buy the Magpies from Ashley.

It was clearly just a throw away comment after a question from a man who supports the club.

If Mayweather had said this unprovoked and outside of Newcastle, maybe it could mean something.

Most fans have seen it as this, having a laugh at the talk of money Mayweather buying the Toon.

But while the undefeated boxer was probably just having a laugh, talk of a Saudi takeover has gone cold.

Despite early signs that it was a done deal, it seems as though it’s business as usual at Newcastle United. Imagine our shock…
