Fabian Schar scored a superb goal for the Swiss national side on Thursday as they drew 1-1 with Ireland in their Group D European Championships qualifier.
It was his eighth goal for Switzerland, and came from a great team move that Schar both started and finished.
It will come as no surprise to Newcastle fans, with him having scored some great goals for his club side since signing in the summer of 2018.
He was not signed for his goals, and his all-round defensive displays got better as last season went on, and he has started in fantastic form this year too.
It is incredible to think Newcastle signed him for a preposterous £3 million, and in just over a year on Tyneside, Newcastle could command a fee many times that amount, were they to sell him in the current market.
Newcastle scouting team are unearthing some great bargains
Considering Schar was a bargain, and Martin Dubravka, at an equally bizarre £4m – a similarly remarkably low fee – it shows that for all things wrong at Newcastle, the scouting department largely gets things right.
If they can continue to unearth talent like those two, the scouts will become Newcastle’s greatest asset, as they save the club millions in transfer fees, while lighting Mike Ashley’s eyes up with the thoughts of profits in the future.
But for now, we should just enjoy reaping the rewards of their finds, and hope that some of the new players can follow suit by belying their transfer fees with performances on the pitch.
