Elliot Anderson must start vs Sheffield Wednesday after Eddie Howe vow

Elliot Anderson will be staying at Newcastle United this month, and must be given his first start since November against Sheffield Wednesday tonight.

The Magpies kick off their FA Cup journey at Hillsborough this evening, as they take on the League One title contenders.

The game comes at an interesting time for Eddie Howe’s side. It comes on the back of a tense 0-0 draw with league leaders Arsenal, and is just a few days before what is Newcastle’s biggest game of the season so far.

Newcastle take on Leicester City in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, with the Magpies aiming to reach the final four of the competition.

That might influence Howe’s team selection against the Owls, with changes expected. And one player who simply has to start versus Darren Moore’s side is Anderson – especially now that he is going nowhere.

Howe on Anderson’s future

Ahead of the game, Howe addressed Anderson’s future. He has been linked with a loan move away from St James’ Park this month, with first-team opportunities somewhat limited.

However, Howe has confirmed that the 20-year-old is going nowhere.

“He’s [Anderson] very valued by us,” Howe said.

“He has had a number of niggles over the last couple of months which have prevented him being involved more.

“He’s got a valuable role to play with us between now and the end season. We certainly won’t be loaning him anywhere.”

Anderson must start vs Sheffield Wednesday

With Anderson set to remain on Tyneside, the FA Cup clash with Sheff Wed is the perfect chance to give the midfielder some minutes.

He has started two games this season, both of which came in the Carabao Cup. The academy graduate has also played in the Premier League, and impressed off the bench against the likes of Wolves and Crystal Palace.

Anderson clearly has a lot of talent, and needs to get senior experience to continue his development. Howe obviously feels he can get that at Newcastle this season, and he might have to rely on the youngster more as the games begin to mount up.

The Magpies don’t have too many midfield options right now following Jonjo Shelvey’s injury. For the game against Arsenal, Anderson was the only substitute who could play in the middle of the park.

And with Howe certain to go full strength against Leicester on Tuesday, he must use the FA Cup contest as a chance to rest one of his midfielders and give Anderson the chance to impress.
