Chelsea are reportedly signing Denis Zakaria on deadline day, which could end up being good news for Newcastle United.
According to the Athletic, the Blues have agreed a deal with Juventus to loan the Swiss midfielder for the season. The deal will also include an option to buy next summer.
Zakaria is reportedly having a medical in Turin ahead of the move, which now looks likely to be completed before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
This comes on the same day that Newcastle were linked with Zakaria, as the Magpies search for a new centre midfielder.
But while he isn’t coming to St James’ Park, his move to Chelsea could open the door for someone else to make the move.
Zakaria deal might mean Newcastle target Gallagher can go out on loan
Earlier in the summer, it was reported that Newcastle were interested in four players from Chelsea. And one of those players was Conor Gallagher.
However, it looked like he would be denied a move away with Thomas Tuchel unable to sign a replacement.
But with Zakaria on his way to Chelsea, perhaps Gallagher will now become available. This development could create an opportunity, on what has been a frustrating deadline day for Newcastle.
The Magpies have so far been unable to make any more additions. Young right-back Harrison Ashby is the only player who has been close to a move to St James’ Park.
But Howe needs a midfielder more pressingly, and Gallagher would be a perfect addition. He was exceptional for Crystal Palace last season, and could have a similar kind of impact in the North East.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Newcastle for a long time, and this late transfer development could open the door for him to finally become a Geordie.
Time is running out, however, meaning Newcastle will need to move fast if there’s any chance.
Let’s hope Chelsea are prepared to let Gallagher leave on loan now, and that he is keen on a last-gasp move to Newcastle.
