Bruno Guimaraes stepped up to win a crucial game for Newcastle United on Saturday with a late goal against Fulham.
As such, Jacob Murphy hailed Guimaraes as Newcastle United’s “saviour”, with the Brazilian international on hand to secure a vital three points for Eddie Howe.
Until the final 20 minutes or so, Newcastle were largely poor against the Cottagers. Murphy’s goal had given them the advantage in the first half but Sasa Lukic’s second half equaliser was hardly against the run of play.
Guimaraes missed a brilliant chance for Newcastle against Fulham when putting a header wide following nice play from Nick Woltemade and Anthony Gordon.
Still, he put that behind him to prod home a dramatic stoppage-time winner following William Osula’s deflected shot.
After the game, Guimaraes revealed an instruction from the Newcastle United coaching staff and the statistics behind his recent performances prove he’s feeling those orders to a tee.

Newcastle United staff urge Bruno Guimaraes to get into the box
Goals have generally been a problem for Newcastle this season. Nick Woltemade has been in fine form in front of goal but not many of his teammates have convinced.
Guimaraes, however, now has three Premier League goals this season. Only Woltemade has more than the Brazilian, who has scored a third of their league goals thus far.
Reflecting on his goal tally this season, Guimaraes admitted that some of the coaches have been urging him to get into the box more often.
He told The Chronicle: “The staff has asked me a lot this season to get in the box more. I am smelling the goal more this season. So, I was in the right place in the right moment.
“I wanted the ground to swallow me up when I missed the header but I wanted to put myself in a position to give myself an opportunity where I would not miss. It was a beautiful moment for me to score in front of the Gallowgate End, my whole family was there, wife, kids and parents, so we will have a good night.”
Captain Bruno Guimaraes following orders at Newcastle United this season
Guimaraes scored five Premier League goals last season and is already only two strikes off of that tally this time around.
In 38 appearances during the 2024/25 league campaign, Guimaraes had nine shots on target inside in the opposition box. This season, he’s already recorded two of those in just eight games.
Clearly, he’s becoming more a penalty box presence. To expect him to score in every game would be unwise of course but he appears to be acting on the instructions given to him.
Already a club legend, more late goals would only endear him to the St James’ Park faithful even further.
