On Tuesday evening, Newcastle managed to scrape by Championship outfit Blackburn in the Carabao Cup.

Steve Bruce fielded a slightly weakened side compared to the one which beat West Ham.

He deployed the likes of Dan Barlaser, Emil Krafth and Mark Gillespie, and also subbed on fringe players like Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu. Luckily, we managed to grab a 1-0 win and reach the third round for the first time in four years.

However, while some of those names above impressed – such as Gillespie – another first-team member with slightly more expected of him floundered in Joelinton.

Our £40 million striker – who has scored four times for us in 45 games – was subbed off in the 72nd minute having taken just one shot and with 17 passes to his name.

When asked about the Brazilian’s display, Bruce had 22 words to say.

The Magpies boss told The Chronicle: ‘He has to dust himself down and get on with the challenge. He had a frustrating night, it is fair to say.’

In our view, these comments should tell the ex-Hoffenheim man one thing – he needs to improve.

This isn’t 2019/20 anymore. We can now call upon a £20 million England international in Callum Wilson.

Joelinton will not be afforded the patience he received last term, and Bruce’s comments could be perceived as a warning shot to the 24-year-old after an ineffective display against lower-league opposition.
