Newcastle have a chance to stop the rot against Burnley this weekend.
The Magpies have failed to score in their last three Premier League outings, and the pressure has really stated to mount on Steve Bruce.
The good luck appears to have ran out, leaving Newcastle nervously looking over their shoulders as a fight for survival possibly looms.
So how will Bruce go about ending his side’s horrendous run of form?
Four at the back
With Ciaran Clark ruled out, Newcastle have just four fit centre-backs. Therefore, it would be a real risk to continue playing three per game.
With the added pressure to change his system before the injury, this is the game where Bruce should switch to four at the back.
The most likely centre-back pairing is Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez, as Fabian Schar has often struggled in a two.
At full back will likely be DeAndre Yedlin and Danny Rose. Javi Manquillo is back and available, though I’d be surprised to see him rushed back into the start XI.
One man who should be rushed back into the side is Jonjo Shelvey.
We’ve desperately missed his ability on the ball, with the midfield combination of Sean Longstaff and Nabil Bentaleb struggling to make an impact.
Those two should drop out, allowing Bruce to pair Shelvey alongside Isaac Hayden. Hayden didn’t deserve to be on the bench, and his return is a must against Burnley.
Options galore in attack
While a back four seems obvious, Bruce has multiple options in attack.
Should he continue with a front three and put another man in midfield in a 4-3-3 formation? Or should he play someone just behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation?
It’s the latter I think he’ll go with. But that then asks another question – should Miguel Almiron or Joelinton play just off Dwight Gayle?
Almiron would be the better fit, but I can see Joelinton playing in the ‘number 10’ role instead.
The two certainties seems to be that Gayle will be up front and Allan Saint-Maximin will remain on the left.
Predicted lineup to face Burnley: Dubravka; Yedlin, Fernandez, Lascelles, Rose; Hayden, Shelvey; Almiron, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin; Gayle.
