When Dwight Gayle went down with an injury, it was disappointing to see Christian Atsu take his place.
Steve Bruce had Andy Carroll and Matt Ritchie on the bench, but opted to go for the Ghanaian instead. While Carroll and Ritchie were likely ignored because of fitness, Atsu failed to justify his manager’s decision.
Despite a sensational start to the season, the wheels have fell off for Atsu. He just doesn’t look capable of playing at Premier League level. He constantly gives the ball away, and doesn’t have the ability to get the better of defenders like he did against Rochdale last week.
And his awful performance just increased Newcastle’s need for Ademola Lookman. The former Everton man is reportedly a target, with Sky Sports stating that the Magpies have held talks with RB Leipzig about a loan move.
Lookman joined Leipzig in the summer for £22million, but he’s struggled to get in the team since arriving. But he would certainly be a good option for Newcastle, who clearly lack depth in attack.
While we started well against Wolves, the second half was a slog. Other than Miguel Almiron, no one else looked capable of creating anything. Atsu didn’t even look interested at times.
In contrast, Lookman would arrive with a point to prove and could be a real star in this Newcastle team.
The sooner he signs the better.
