Antonio Barreca won’t have fond memories of his time with Newcastle.
The Italian arrived on loan last January, one of two players to join the Magpies that month.
But while Miguel Almiron became the club’s record signing and is still adored by fans, Barreca is enduring another loan spell to forget.
The defender returned to Monaco in the summer, but was shipped out once again. This time it was back to his native Italy with Genoa.
After 26 games, Genoa are facing a battle to survive. They are 17th in Serie A, out of the relegation zone on goal difference alone.
Barreca has been unable to inspire his new team up the table, but he’s at least played more than he did under Rafa Benitez.
During his loan spell at St James’ Park, Barreca played just once. He came off the bench late on in a defeat to Tottenham, but that was it.
At Genoa though, he’s played 10 times so far in all competitions. While that’s a lot more than he managed at Newcastle, he’s still missed a lot of action – and not because of injury.
His last Serie A appearance was on January 25th, sitting on the bench for the next five games – a run that saw Genoa pick up 10 points.
So far this season, Barreca has only featured in one win.
If they do survive, it doesn’t look like it’ll be because of their former Newcastle loanee.
Rafa Benitez made some excellent signings as Newcastle manager, but Barreca is one we want to forget.
