This weekend’s game against Manchester City is a very important one for one Newcastle United player – Miguel Almiron.
The 28-year-old has started both of the Magpies’ Premier League games so far, and enjoyed a brilliant pre-season where he was scoring for fun.
It’s as if he’s been inspired by the words of one man who he could come up against on Sunday…
It’s time for Miguel Almiron vs Jack Grealish
At the end of last season, Manchester City were declared Premier League champions. They topped the table and won their fourth title in five years.
It was a big achievement for Pep Guardiola and co, and it inspired post-season celebrations. And one player who celebrated a lot was Jack Grealish.
It was the first time he had won major silverware, justifying his decision to leave Aston Villa for £100million last summer.
But in the midst of the title celebrations, he had a little pop at our Paraguayan. On a video on Instagram, Grealish was asked by Bernardo Silva what the secret was to City’s final day comeback that secured them the title.
The England international said that one of the reasons was taking Riyad Mahrez off because he ‘played like Almiron’.
An absolutely needless comment from Grealish, and he has felt the wrath of Toon fans ever since. However, he is yet to face them in the flesh – until now.
Grealish will be in town for Man City’s game against Newcastle, and must be braced for a torrent of abuse if he features.
As for Almiron, he will be desperate to put in a good performance and get one over on City’s number 10. He finally has the chance to shut Grealish up and prove why his comments were completely uncalled for.
In truth, it will be a very difficult game for Newcastle. Eddie Howe will need a masterplan to get anything against the champions.
But the Almiron vs Grealish fiasco is certainly an interesting subplot.
