If Allan Saint-Maximin wants to know what it will take to be a hit at Newcastle, hopefully he paid close attention to Christian Atsu’s performance against Tottenham.
The Ghanaian replaced Saint-Maximin early on against Spurs, coming on for his first appearance of the season as the French winger limped off with a reoccurring hamstring issue.

No one saw it coming, but Atsu played a huge role in handing Newcastle their first win of the season. His pass to set up Joelinton was sublime, but it was his all round game that truly stood out and sent a message to Saint-Maximin.
The summer signing is notorious for his fantastic dribbling ability and skill, something Atsu can also bring to the party. He might not be as naturally gifted, but he made up for it with his work ethic and attitude.

Atsu put the team first against Tottenham
Atsu used the ball well all afternoon, looking composed in possession no matter where he had it on the pitch.
While he got the assist, the 27-year-old actually played an even bigger role in Joelinton’s goal. He completed multiple passes as Newcastle played the ball out from the back comfortably and confidently.

There were times where Atsu played it simple and found a teammate where you’d have expected Saint-Maximin to go on a run and try and beat a man. While this might dazzle fans, the team is more important.
Atsu only cost Newcastle £6.2 million, but is a valuable squad player who can have an impact on his day. And he also does what is best for the team.
Saint-Maximin is going to be a fan favourite with his style of play, there’s no doubt. But if he can follow the example set by Atsu, he could become a real Toon hero.
