Allan Saint-Maximin scored his first Newcastle United goal last night, in a way that nobody expected.

The Magpies took the lead thanks to a towering header, but it wasn’t Andy Carroll scoring his first goal of the season. Instead it was Saint-Maximin climbing highest, converting Javi Manquillo’s cross with his head.

The Frenchman has quickly become a fans’ favourite for his exciting style of football, but the only thing missing from his game was a goal. But he’s finally opened his account, helping secure a vital three points at Bramall Lane. And he picked the right day to do it, scoring his first goal on his mother’s birthday.

Newcastle now have 19 points, sitting moderately comfortable in mid-table.

Despite the goal, Saint-Maximin was quieter than usual against Sheffield United, unable to run at will as much as he would like. He looked lethargic at times, but that was probably down to a knock he picked up. The winger was seen boasting an ice pack on his leg at full time.

Saint-Maximin’s dance moves were also on display on Thursday night, in GIF form. After the goal, a graphic appeared on the screen to confirm that the 22-year-old had scored, accompanied with a GIF of the player doing a little dance routine. Is there anything that man can’t do?
