A win against Leicester would give Newcastle much needed momentum

Steve Bruce can breathe a sigh of relief, he’s got his first win as Newcastle manager. But can he get a second in quick succession?

The Magpies are in action once again on Wednesday night, as Leicester head to St James’ Park for a Carabao Cup clash.

When he was appointed, Bruce made a point about taking the cup competitions seriously, something that hasn’t happened in the Mike Ashley era.

But after beating Tottenham on Sunday, the League Cup is about more than just reaching the third round of the competition. It offers Newcastle a chance to gain some serious momentum.

Beating Tottenham was a huge result, and a win over Leicester would also be very impressive. They are two of the top sides in England, with the Foxes still yet to suffer defeat in the Premier League.

Bruce will need to name as strong a side as possible to remain true to his word, and he might want to do that just to build on Sunday’s win.

We need momentum. The win at Spurs can’t be a one off. We need to build on that performance and go on a strong run of form.

If we can beat Leicester and reach the next round of the League Cup, the players will be seriously excited to face Watford on Saturday. The Hornets have started the season poorly, and we can’t be the team that allows them to get their season going.

Reaching the third round of the League Cup would be great, but gaining momentum is arguably even more important. Fortunately, the two will go hand in hand.
