3 previously reported targets Newcastle will wish they signed

Newcastle United have been linked with so many players over the past couple of years.

In the end, only a handful of players came into the club over the last few windows.

Magpies fans will likely be in for a very different January 2022 though compared to what they have been used to, following the October takeover of the club.

The club aare really struggling in the Premier League, and need to make some serious and shrewd additions to help stave off relegation come May next year.

But what about those players that were linked but ultimately never pitched up at St. James’ Park?

Here are three previous Newcastle targets that the Magpies may wish they had tried harder to sign.

Hakan Calhanoglu

Newcastle were linked with a move for Hakan Calhanoglu back in March 2020, with it being claimed Lee Charnley had scouted the Turkey international ‘extenesively’.

The club never moved for the attacking midfielder, who finished that season with AC Milan with 11 goals and nine assists to his name.

Last term, he scored nine goals and made 12 assists.

This season, after transferring to Inter Milan, Calhanoglu has already scored six times and made eight assists.

He is clearly a hugely creative player. The fact he recently transferred to Inter will probably mean Newcastle have missed the boat.

Denzel Dumfries

Newcastle reportedly had interest in Denzel Dumfries in November 2020.

Despite having a few options at right-back/right wing-back, it was a position Newcastle needed to strengthen – and they still do.

Dumfries was linked, but the club seemingly never acted on their interest. He was even open to a Premier League move.

The attack-minded star finished last season with a very impressive four goals and nine assists to his name.

He then gave a fantastic account of himelf at Euro 2020 with the Netherlands, which ultimately helped him seal a move to Inter Milan, where he’s started brilliantly and is a regular in the side. Newcastle will surely rue not pushing harder.

Fikayo Tomori

Tomori had impressed for Chelsea in Frank Lampard’s first season at Stamford Bridge.

But the central defender was then out of favour.

Newcastle were supposedly keen to take Tomori on loan, but it was AC Milan who won the battle for the England international.

Since moving to Italy, Tomori has wowed. He helped the Rossoneri get back into the Champions League after years away from the competition.

Milan moved to make his move permanent in the summer of 2021, with the fee reportedly around £25 million.

This term, Tomori’s good form has continued. He’s largely been a regular, making 21 appearances so far.

Milan are fighting their bitter rivals Inter for the Serie A title, and key to winning that battle will be the form and consistency of Tomori.

Newcastle’s defensive issues in recent times have been well documented. Tomori is surely a player the club regret not landing.
