According to reports, Newcastle United sent scouts to the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Newcastle scouts were present to watch Benfica vs. Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich won the game 2-0, courtesy of goals from Robert Lewandowski and Renato Sanches.

But who were Newcastle watching? Here are three players the Magpies might have been checking on.

Ruben Dias

Newcastle are constantly looking for ways to improve their defensive record.

Dias is considered to be one of the best young defenders in Europe at the moment.

The 21-year-old has already been recognised by Portugal at senior level. Consequently, some clubs across Europe have started to pay attention to him.

But Newcastle could swoop ahead of the crowd with a January move.

Pizzi

Newcastle need some creativity in midfield. Pizzi is a player who can provide just that.

Operating in either a central or wide role, the 28-year-old is a talented player.

Furthermore, he has 11 Portugal caps to show for his talents and might fancy a Premier League test.

Renato Sanches

Alternatively, Newcastle might have been keeping their tabs on Sanches.

The Portugal international had a torrid spell on loan at Swansea City last season but there is no denying his talent.

The 21-year-old was playing his first game of the season and he notched a goal.

Will Bayern Munich let him out on loan again in January? If so, Newcastle could be a good destination, Sanches will have a point to prove and the Magpies could do with his attacking flair in midfield.
