Newcastle United’s fixture against Arsenal did not go to plan and Eddie Howe must now be considering his options for his next league match.
There have been so many calls for Howe to drop Dan Burn after a number of difficult performances where he has had to be subbed off early in the second half because of key mistakes.
While the head coach had changed his team up by playing Tino Livramento at left-back, it did not stop Arsenal from running riot against a disappointing Newcastle defence and Howe must now be considering putting Burn back in.
Howe disappointed in Newcastle’s collapse to Arsenal
There wasn’t much to expect in a game where you are playing one of the best team sin the Premier League and the one f the deadliest attacks, but Newcastle’s performance at the Emirates was pitiful.
The visitors never even stood a chance from the minute the game kicked off as each and every single player looked well off the pace and struggled to get a hold of the ball throughout the whole first half.
Things did slightly improve in the final 45 minutes, but Arsenal’s third goal had pretty much killed off any hope of Howe’s Newcastle side getting a result at a stadium where they hadn’t score for 10 years.
The only players who could give Howe the slightest of positives was Joe Willock and Burn who had been subbed on in the second half and created a great consolation goal as the £13m defender whipped a cross into the former Arsenal man to head home.

Howe could stick with Burn from this point on
Playing against Arsenal isn’t exactly the game that should be used as a measuring stick and while it was not Livramento’s best showing in a Newcastle shirt, any player would have struggled up against an in-form Bukayo Saka.
That said, Howe has been very keen all throughout the season to stick with what he knows and continue to play Burn at left-back, and if nothing else this will have only backed up his theory.
Livramento could return against Blackburn in tomorrow night’s FA Cup fixture given his lack of playing time, but it’s very likely Howe will want Burn back in the team to face Wolves at the weekend to ideally give Newcastle a height advantage for set-pieces.
Wolves are in a good vein of form at the minute and have leapfrogged Newcastle in the Premier League, so while it doesn’t look like such a big fixture on paper it will be massive for Howe’s future at the club.
