Gary Lineker was left shocked after what Alan Shearer has just claimed about winning trophies for Newcastle United.
Shearer sadly never won anything either for Newcastle or England as the Geordies trophy drought continues with their last piece of silverware coming in 1969 with the Fairs Cup.
On The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker asked if he would rather score to win the World Cup with England or manage Newcastle to win the treble and Shearer could only pick one answer for his boyhood club.
Shearer shocks Lineker with Newcastle claim
With last night’s FA Cup victory fresh in the mind Newcastle supporters will only have one thing in their minds at the minute and that’s the possibility of returning to Wembley to fight for another trophy.
They came so close to ending their drought last season when they reached the Carabao Cup final, but a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United denied them their first domestic trophy since 1955.
It’s often been a big debate in football whether you’d rather your club or country won something, but Shearer made it very obvious that there was only one choice for him.
Lineker was left shocked by Shearer’s answer after the former Barcelona and Leicester man though picking your country to win the World Cup was going to be the obvious choice for most.
On the podcast, Lineker asked: “Would you rather score a winning goal in a World Cup final or manage Newcastle to winning the treble? There’s only one answer to that one, isn’t there.”
Shearer replied: “Yeah, Newcastle treble.”
Lineker: “Really? What over scoring the winning goal in a World Cup final?”
Shearer: “Yes! I’m not selfish like you! I want to give pleasure to my people here in Newcastle, we’ll have the treble thanks very much.”
Lineker: “What about giving pleasure to the people in Newcastle and the rest of the country? Wow.”

Newcastle are absolutely desperate for success
For one of the bigger clubs in England, Newcastle’s recent history does not match up with some of the clubs around them and their supporters are desperate to make their claim for being a top club.
If you asked most, they would almost definitely take finishing 17th if it meant that they could win a bit of silverware this season, something that generations of fans have never seen in their lifetime.
It had also been over 20 years since Newcastle last competed in the Champions League with Mike Ashley’s tenure at the club full of distain and disappointment almost every season.
Now, however, there is renewed hope with the new owners who have huge ambitions and would love to make their mark on the game very early on with an FA Cup victory this season.
