An Anthony Gordon goal was enough for Newcastle United to claim a controversial win over Arsenal on Saturday evening.

In a scrappy, fiery game at St James’ Park, Newcastle claimed a huge statement win over a previously unbeaten Gunners side.

There were a number of flashpoints throughout the game. Kai Havertz may well have been sent off for a challenge on Sean Longstaff in the first half, while Bruno Guimaraes was perhaps lucky to avoid a red card for leaving something on Jorginho.

Then there’s the goal. Gordon tapped in from close range after Joe Willock had kept Jacob Murphy’s cross alive, with Joelinton nodding across.

Not only did VAR check a possible ball out of play, they checked a potential foul and an offside. After what felt like an age, however, it was awarded and proved enough to claim a massive three points.

Still, former Newcastle star Chris Waddle did not agree with the call.

Newcastle vs Arsenal: Chris Waddle couldn’t believe VAR decision

Indeed, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Waddle said: “Wow.

“It’s great for the game to have a goal but how can you give that? Wow.

“There haven’t been a lot of talking points in this game so far. Well, we have a big one now.”

Newcastle vs Arsenal: Tight decisions finally go Newcastle’s way

Cast your minds back to the gut-wrenching loss to Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold was not sent off at St James’ Park when he could well have been and Newcastle ultimately lost a tight game.

Sometimes, these decisions go against you. Sometimes, they go your way.

While Arsenal might have a case that the ball went out of play, it’s difficult to absolutely prove that.

Newcastle might have been lucky with Guimaraes not getting dismissed too but, thankfully, today was their day.

It has certainly been coming.
