‘World-class’ forward Newcastle wanted to sign this summer booed by his own fans last night

Newcastle United had been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid outcast Joao Felix many times in the run up to the summer transfer window.

Newcastle never made their move for Joao Felix but it was strongly rumoured that the Magpies were interested in a potential loan deal to take him away from his Atletico Madrid hell.

Felix had been sent to train with the reserves by Atletico boss Diego Simeone as the two big personalities clashed. Felix spent a big chunk of last season on loan at Chelsea but on his return to Atletico has done very little to try and repair the damage.

Recently Felix has spoken about a dream move to Barcelona which only angered Simeone further who, according to 90min slammed Felix demanding that “nobody is above the club”.

Despite the clear animosity, Felix was named on the bench for Atletico in their 3-1 victory over Granada and as his name was read out by the stadium announcer it was greeted with a chorus of boos from the Atletico fans.

It must be the biggest sign yet that Felix’s time is up at Atletico, it’s hard to come back when the fans turn on you.

Newcastle’s FFP situation will be a stumbling block for a Felix move

The big question is where does he go? Felix arrived at Atletico for £113million in 2019 which is a huge sum of money to try and recoup, especially when any interested club will be very aware of how much Simeone will want rid.

Given Newcastle’s struggles with FFP it’s very unlikely that their interest will be revived unless they can work out a loan deal with an obligation to buy. Kieran Trippier might be pushing for a move for Felix having once described his former team mate as ‘world-class‘.

Barcelona are very interested but are also bound by their financial situation, so there’s still a chance that Felix is forced to stay at Atletico until at least January if nobody else comes in. In which case that’s going to be an interesting few months.
