Reports emerged from the Midlands that Wolves are thought to be winning the race for Rafa Benitez target, Salomon Rondon.

The Express and Star reporter, Tim Spiers, claimed Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are front-runners, but adds that they are a not close to an agreement.

It will come as a blow to Newcastle fans, if they do not complete the permanent signing of a player they took to their hearts during a campaign that saw him named player of the season.

Quite how Newcastle might miss out on a player who has made no secret of his desire to sign, and after a string of fantastic performances, will baffle many fans.

But Mike Ashley’s stringent policy of only signing players under-25, and reluctance to fork out fees if he is not going to see a profit on his investment, means any deal for the Venezuelan will not be straightforward.

But with the player said to be integral to Rafa’s contract negotiations, it would be a hard one for the manager to take, should he end up at Molineux.

While the clamour for Rondon to return to Tyneside is almost universal, the Wolves fans have a slightly more varied opinion.
