At this moment in time, Newcastle United do not have anyone else who can do what Bruno Guimaraes does.
The 26-year-old is completely unique, and that is why he is so important to Eddie Howe’s side. We have seen that over the past couple of weeks, with Bruno playing at an extremely high level up against elite opposition.
He was instrumental in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Manchester United, with his tactical awareness and relentless pressing allowing him to win the battle of the Brunos in the middle of the park.
Without Bruno, Newcastle are a completely different team. Not only is he an immense player, but he plays in a position that other players struggle in. He operates as the ‘six’, sitting in the middle of the midfield three and orchestrating proceedings.
The club have looked for someone else to play in that position to allow Bruno to move higher up the pitch, but to no avail.
However, they do have someone in their ranks who Eddie Howe believes will be able to play in that position in the coming years.
Eddie Howe thinks Lewis Miley can play as a ‘six’ in the future
Ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Everton, Howe spoke to the media. He was asked to give his thoughts on Lewis Miley’s best position after a spectacular run in the Toon starting lineup.
“I’d say at the moment he’s probably better higher up the pitch where he’s able to run and play with a bit more freedom,” he said.
“Whereas the ‘six’ is such a tactical position. I think in the future he can be a ‘six’ for us, without a doubt. I think that needs a bit more development.”

It speaks volumes about Lewis Miley‘s talent that Howe thinks he can develop into a ‘number six’. We have seen Sean Longstaff and Joelinton play there, both of which have struggled with the demands of that position.
But Howe has no doubts that Miley can make the transition, as he continues his development as a footballer.
If that does happen, it could end up saving Newcastle an absolute fortune in the transfer market, which is exactly what Dan Ashworth wants. He is keen for the club to produce and nurture its own talent, rather than splash out on ready-made stars.
For now, Miley will continue to play in a more advanced role. The 17-year-old looks comfortable there, shining against the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
But Howe is confident that in time he could have a more disciplined role in midfield.
